Southdowns acted as expert witnesses on behalf of the Dublin Port Tunnel project’s Employer (Irish National Roads Authority and Dublin City Council). Significant groundborne noise and vibration issues had arisen as a result of tunnel boring through hard rock lying beneath residential communities resulting in withdrawal of the 24 hr working for tunnel construction. The contractor pursued the employer for 16 million Euros in compensation following completion of the project. The ‘Hitchin Curve’ forms part of Network Rail’s strategic development programme to relieve network congestion at a notorious bottleneck on the East Coast Main Line. The new flyover will be a combination of concrete viaduct sections and filled embankment, and is to be constructed on greenfield land to the north of Hitchin. Working through a large multi-disciplinary consulting engineering organisation, Southdowns provided expert independent specialist advice to the Council’s Officers on a number of different projects. Paddington Long Term Vehicular Access Bridge. The LTVA project involved the replacement of a major bowstring road bridge which crosses a number of railway lines and a canal close to Paddington Station.
