Haripur Power Station, Bangladesh

Southdowns was commissioned to advise on monitoring protocols to demonstrate compliance with national and World Bank noise standards and was subsequently tasked to visit the site to undertake detailed noise measurements before and after the power barge became operational.

To satisfy increasing demand for capacity in Bangladesh the national master plan for power generation required 2000 MW of new plant to be delivered over a five year period. To achieve these aims, private sector projects included a 120 MW barge mounted power plant located at Haripur on the Sitalakhya River.

The plant consisted of eight 16 MW reciprocating diesel engines which were enclosed on a single barge and fired on natural gas with heavy fuel oil as a pilot fuel. Various noise mitigation measures were incorporated to protect a nearby village and local school. These include relocation of the school pictured above and the construction of a new facility shown below.
